Raw Combatives Jim Armstrong took a break from his holiday when he was up in Sydney last November
& was kind enough to pop down & teach the lads & myself.
Here's a quick review from that Raw Combatives workshop.
Tai chi'ish Push hands
Jim started off with a functional warm drill & great drill for developing ones owns balancing skills,
he also incorporates striking & grappling into this drill as well when your up to a good standard.
This is a fun drill & as Jim points out not the way you would fight!
Grip drill/ Pinch drill
I have to agree on this one, far to many people grip like their gripping a tennis racket, when gripping another
persons wrist and or body part.
Gripping properly should involve gripping to hurt/ inflicting maximum pain & damage!
Great drill for developing functional grip strength and body conditioning.
The whole ideal behind the mindset was to not register pain even if you where in pain lol, not to show it to
your opponent.. not easy to do.
In a real world situation you don't let anyone lay their hands on you let alone grab hold of your wrist or any
other body part.
Power Generation
Jim then demonstrated the correct body-mechanics for developing powerful slaps & open handed strikes.
The concept/ body-mechanics is the same as throwing a ball etc.
Hitting hard from your everyday stance (the fence/ passive stance).
Through the whole of the workshop the all important underlying message was verbal diffusion first & foremost & if things go pear shaped... forward mindset & hitting hard.
Jim's a humble & very knowledgeable instructor with a wealth of practical experience from all things personal protection/ real worlds, right through to traditional martial arts & can make the application from art to personal protection cross over.
If your in Melbourne then look up Raw Combatives Jim as in my opinion he's Melbourne's best kept secret.
It was a very refreshing & enjoyable workshop, thanks Jim.
